Fire engulfs school in Srinagar on ‘Childrens’ Day

 

Srinagar, Nov 14, KNT: A  fire broke out at Muslim Public School in the Kursu Raj Bagh area of Srinagar uptown on ‘Children’s Day’, causing extensive damage to the top floor of the school building. Fortunately, all students and staff members were safely evacuated, thanks to the swift response of firefighters, locals, and police.

School sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the blaze began when smoke started emanating from the roof of the school during celebrations, sending panic among students and staff. Within minutes, the school was engulfed in flames, prompting a chaotic evacuation. Some students left behind their bags and personal belongings in the chaos.

Five fire tenders rushed to the spot, and firefighters, assisted by locals and police, managed to control the fire.

Parents and local residents rushed to the school to ensure the children’s safety.

Minister for Education Sakina Itoo and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar also arrived at the scene to assess the situation.

“We are relieved that all students and staff are safe,” Sakina Itoo said, expressing satisfaction. “This incident will be thoroughly investigated, and we will provide all necessary support to the school authorities,” she assured and described the incident as an accident.

A police official said that the cause of the fire is not known yet and an investigation has been started to ascertain the facts. [KNT]
