Police Intervene to Quell Post-Poll Clashes in South Kashmir’s Kulgam

 

Kulgam, Oct 10, KNT: Tensions boiled over in Kulgam district’s Bachro and Tarigam villages, as supporters of rival political candidates clashed following the declaration of CPI(M) candidate Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami’s victory in the Kulgam assembly segment.

Yesterday, a youth identified as Muhammad Omar from Bachro village was injured after being allegedly assaulted by Tarigami supporters in Tarigam village. Additionally, eyewitnesses reported that Farhan Ramzan also from Bachroo was critically injured during clashes between Jamat-i-Islami and CPI(M) supporters and was shifted to SKIMS Soura for treatment.

Locals from Bachro village alleged that Tarigami supporters from Tarigam village ignited firecrackers in a graveyard, sparking tensions when villagers intervened. The situation escalated into full-blown clashes, resulting in damage to multiple vehicles.
Police swiftly intervened, using cane charges to disperse the crowds and bring the situation under control. However, tensions remain.

The clashes have sparked widespread concern, with multiple videos going viral on social media. People urged authorities to maintain law and order and prevent further escalation.

The Kulgam assembly segment witnessed intense campaigning, with CPI(M) candidate Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami ultimately emerging victorious. The election results sparked celebrations among Tarigami supporters, while rival factions expressed dissatisfaction.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the clashes, with officials promising action against those responsible. As the situation remains fragile, locals appeal for calm and restraint, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence.

Meanwhile, police have been deployed in both these villages to maintain law and order.

Bachroo is the native village of Jamat-i-Islami slain leader Abdul Razaq Mir who was elected in the 1987 Assembly elections on the ticket of the Muslim United Front. He allegedly fell victim to Ikhwanis gunfire when militancy was at its peak in Kashmir Valley. [KNT]
