UT status limits our ability to address certain issues: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, Nov 22, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday said that the current Union Territory (UT) status limits their ability to address certain issues.

He said they need statehood to get political prisoners freed from the jails.

Omar Abdullah expressed his commitment to restoring statehood, citing its importance in freeing people from jails and making progress on various concerns.

Omar Abdullah as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust was talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function organized by the Floriculture Department in Srinagar.

Omar Abdullah also addressed the recent incident of torture of civilians by soldiers in Kishtwar, demanding stern punishment for those responsible. He expressed disappointment that despite past incidents, no lessons have been learned. He hoped that the army would investigate the matter and take action against the guilty.

In response to a question, Omar Abdullah revealed that his administration has instructed the police to review the cases of political prisoners, particularly about the verification process, which has been a major concern for many. He assured that people will find it easier to navigate the verification issue, and his government is working to address the concerns of the people. [KNT]
