Taking note of the rising mortality cases at SMHS Hospital Srinagar, Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar today confirmed that he will look into the matter.
For the last 2 years, over 6,000 deaths occurred in the hospital.
Recently, an official statement from the hospital confirmed that 3110 patients died till November 2023. The number of deaths witnessed an increase from 1813 deaths in 2020 to 2068 in 2021 and 3176 in 2022. The figures for 2023 alone show 3110 reported deaths, painting a grim picture of the healthcare situation in Valley.
Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Saifuddin Soz in a communique to Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar sought an inquiry into the matter.
“Yes, I wrote a letter to Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar seeking a thorough probe into the deaths of patients that have taken place on a large scale. I received complaints from different people who claimed that this premier health care institution has turned into a slaughterhouse which lacks infrastructure and manpower,” Soz told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.
“The figures signify that SMHS Hospital is not in a good state. It is for the welfare of the people where they get poor treatment,” he said and confirmed that Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar in his reply assured him that the matter will be looked into at the earliest. [KNT]
