NEW DELHI: India’s small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) are increasingly embracing digital technology as online sales continue to play a larger role in the country’s retail economy. Entrepreneurs across sectors are investing in e-commerce platforms, digital payments and social media marketing to reach customers beyond their local markets.

Business owners say changing consumer habits and the growing popularity of online shopping have encouraged them to build a stronger digital presence. Many retailers that once depended entirely on walk-in customers are now receiving a significant share of their orders through websites, online marketplaces and messaging applications.

The shift is particularly visible among businesses dealing in fashion, home décor, handicrafts and personalised gifts. Digital storefronts have enabled smaller brands to compete with larger companies by offering unique products directly to customers across India.

“We’ve seen a clear increase in online enquiries over the past year,” said Priya Sharma, who operates a handcrafted gift business in Jaipur. “Social media has become our biggest marketing tool, and customers now expect businesses to have an online presence.”

Industry observers note that digital payment systems, faster logistics and affordable advertising have lowered the barriers for entrepreneurs looking to expand. Many businesses are also using artificial intelligence to create promotional content, respond to customer queries and analyse sales trends.

Financial experts believe easier access to digital tools is helping new entrepreneurs launch businesses with relatively low investment. Government-backed initiatives promoting digital payments and startup growth have also contributed to the sector’s expansion.

However, challenges remain. Rising competition, increasing advertising costs and cybersecurity concerns continue to affect many small enterprises. Business owners are also focusing on building customer trust through faster delivery, transparent return policies and improved after-sales support.

Analysts expect India’s SME sector to remain one of the country’s strongest drivers of employment and economic growth in the coming years. As consumer behaviour continues to evolve, businesses that combine quality products with a strong digital strategy are likely to remain ahead in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

With technology becoming an essential part of everyday commerce, India’s small businesses are proving that innovation is no longer limited to large corporations. For many entrepreneurs, going digital is no longer an option—it has become a necessity for long-term growth.
