Underage Driving:   Directorate Education Issues Strict Guidelines to Schools, Coaching Centres

Srinagar, Nov 19, KNT: The Directorate of Education Kashmir has sounded the alarm on underage driving, citing a disturbing rise in road accidents involving students. In a bid to curb this trend, the department has issued a circular prohibiting minors from driving to school.

“All government and private recognized schools, as well as coaching centers in the Kashmir Division, are now under strict instructions to prevent students from driving any motor vehicle, including two-wheelers and four-wheelers, to their institutions. Heads of institutions and administrators are tasked with enforcing compliance, denying entry to students who arrive by vehicle, and informing parents accordingly.”

To drive home the message, schools are directed to conduct awareness campaigns through Road Safety and School Safety clubs, highlighting the dangers of underage driving and the legal consequences under the Motor Vehicles Act. Parent-teacher meetings will also focus on road safety, age restrictions, and parental responsibility.

The circular as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust emphasizes the risks posed by minors operating vehicles, warning parents and guardians of their legal accountability for allowing underage driving. “Institutions found violating these guidelines face severe penalties, including withdrawal of recognition or cancellation of registration.”

“This directive is part of a broader effort to ensure public safety and enforce traffic regulations. By involving schools, parents, and law enforcement, the Kashmir Education Directorate aims to prevent tragic accidents and promote responsible behavior among young drivers.”

Institutions have been urged to disseminate the circular widely among staff, students, and parents, ensuring immediate and strict adherence to the guidelines.” [KNT]
