Kashmir Tourism: TASK Meets MLA Farooq Shah

Srinagar, Nov 14, KNT: In a significant move to address the challenges faced by Kashmir’s tourism industry, the Travel Agents Society of Kashmir (TASK) held a strategic meeting with Farooq Shah, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Tangmarg, at Hotel Snowland in Srinagar.

The meeting brought together managing committee members, office bearers, and senior travel and tourism industry veterans to discuss key issues and potential solutions.

Given Shah’s extensive experience and knowledge in the tourism industry, the meeting focused on crucial concerns such as streamlining tourism services in Gulmarg, reviving nationwide roadshows to promote Kashmir’s tourism, and exploring public-private partnerships for the proposed Sonmarg Gondola project. Shah assured attendees that he would personally raise these issues with the Chief Minister to ensure prompt action and support for Kashmir’s tourism sector.

Senior tourism player, G.R. Siah emphasized the importance of preserving Kashmir’s traditional trekking routes, opposing the construction of gondolas or roads along these routes to protect the region’s natural beauty and heritage ¹. The need for free movement of vehicles across the valley, particularly in areas like Gulmarg and Sinthan Top, was also highlighted to make Kashmir a more tourist-friendly destination.

TASK President Mohammed Ibrahim Siah expressed optimism about the current government’s approach to tourism, hoping that they will address the challenges faced by the tourism fraternity and elevate Kashmir’s tourism sector to new heights ². Sonmarg Hotel Association President Farooq Hafeez stressed the need to introduce winter tourism activities in Sonmarg, which could transform the destination into a year-round attraction.

The meeting concluded with plans to convene a joint meeting of all travel, hotel, houseboat, and other tourism service provider associations from across Jammu and Kashmir. Shah was invited to participate in this upcoming meeting, leveraging his valuable insights and expertise to create a comprehensive strategy for resolving industry issues.

As Kashmir continues to face challenges in its tourism industry, including infrastructure development and promotional strategies, this meeting marks a significant step towards addressing these concerns and promoting sustainable growth and development in the region. [KNT]
