: Non-availability of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan facility in government hospitals at South Kashmir district headquarters is creating a lot of problems for the patients who cannot afford such type of scanning at private diagnostic centres.

A delegation from Pulwama said that like other district hospitals in South Kashmir, Pulwama district hospital lacks an MRI scan facility.

One of the natives from the district told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that they have to travel to Srinagar to get themselves scanned.

“If you visit Super-Speciality Hospital Shireen Bagh and SKIMS Soura, you will find patients from the Southern district including Pulwama, Anantnag, Kulgam, and Shopian making a beeline to get scanned themselves,” he added.

A medico said that sufficient funds are not available for buying the MRI scan machine. He said at some places the machine has been sanctioned but not installed.

Notably, Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a medical imaging technique that uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues in the human body.

The locals said that the authorities must not sleep over this sensitive matter as it involves the health issues of common people, particularly poor patients.

A patient claimed that despite doctors advising him to go for an MRI scan, he didn’t visit Srinagar owing to his poverty.

When contacted Medical Superintendent District Hospital Pulwama said that only a handful of government health institutions in Srinagar offer this crucial diagnostic service. He however said that the government is upgrading the facilities in the hospitals in a phased manner. [KNT]
