Two local LeT militants surrender during encounter in South Kashmir’s Kulgam: Police

Two local Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants surrendered during a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Kulgam on Wednesday morning after an appeal from their parents, police said.
On Tuesday night, a joint team of Jammu Kashmir Police, Army and paramilitary forces cordoned off Hadigam village in Kulgam after inputs about the presence of militants in the village. As the joint team of forces were zeroing in on the target, the militants allegedly opened fire, leading to a gunfight, police said.
Police said that during the course of the encounter after they learnt that the militants were locals, they approached their families and brought them to the site to motivate the militants to surrender. According to the police, the militants surrendered on the appeal of their parents.
Police in a tweet said that during the encounter, 02 local militants surrendered on the appeal of their parents and police. It said that incriminating materials, arms and ammunition were recovered.
Reports said that these two militants had joined militant ranks a week ago.
Meanwhile, former Jammu Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in a tweet said: “Two lives saved thanks to the efforts of their families & the support extended by security forces. These kinds of efforts must be continued so that youngsters who join militancy are given a second chance to live their lives.” (KNT)
