Massive showdown over Prophet (PBUH) remark as protests erupt in Delhi, UP, Kolkata after Friday prayers

Massive protests have broken out in Delhi and Kolkata over the row over remarks about the Prophet which led to global outrage. In Delhi, the protest erupted outside Jama Masjid after the Friday prayers with demands for the arrest of Nupur Sharma, who made the comments and was later suspended from the BJP.

People gathered in large numbers to protest against inflammatory remarks by Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal. The Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid said, “No call for protest given by Masjid.”

“We don’t know who are the ones protesting. I think they belong to AIMIM or are Owaisi’s people. We made it clear that if they want to protest, they can, but we will not support them,” he said.

The protesters demanded the arrest of Nupur Sharma.

Meanwhile, the Bengal unit of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind appealed to the Muslims to protest peacefully in the state against the comments made by Nupur Sharma – the now suspended BJP spokesperson – on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during a TV debate.

“We appeal to Muslims to protest in a democratic way. We don’t want protests on roads. We want people to protest indoors – in houses, in mosques – but don’t want people to protest by blocking roads,” Siddiqullah Chowdhury, the President of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind’s West Bengal branch said.

In Kashmir capital Srinagar, authorities suspended mobile internet service after a spontaneous shutdown. Congress leader Muhammad Shafi led a protest against the derogatory remarks made about the Prophet of Humanity.
