Two drunkards held in Srinagar for carousing in Dal Lake
Srinagar, June 11, KNT: Police in Kashmir capital Srinagar arrested the duo who in a purported video were seen openly carousing in a Shikara in the Dal Lake.
The duo are from outside Kashmir and were booked for their malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
Earlier, a video had gone viral in which two individuals were seen in an inebriated condition in a shikara with liquor bottles in front of them.
The video was posted by one Kamal Puri on Instagram.
Muthida Majlis Ulema – a body of religious and educational organizations had demanded strict action against the culprits for hurting the sentiments of the majority community in Kashmir Valley.
Police earlier had called the shikara owner for questioning, one of the relatives of the shikarawala told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.
Today Srinagar police said that it acted swiftly following the emergence of a viral video showing unidentified individuals engaging in offensive behaviour on a shikara in Dal Lake while in an inebriated state. The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media platforms.
A case has been registered under FIR no. 83/2024, invoking Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Ram Munshibagh Police Station. This section pertains to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, and additional suspects are currently being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. [KNT]
