Authorities have left the construction work of a building meant for a hostel for Gujjar and Bakarwal students midway.

A hostel for students living in hilly areas was coming up in the Khag area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district but the executive agency Roads and Building Department has stopped the construction work due to the paucity of funds.

Locals from Khag told news agency Kashmir News Trust that lakhs of rupees have been spent so far on this hostel building. “This hostel was meant for the students who come from far-flung areas but the stoppage of work in the building has dashed all the hopes of parents,” one of the members from Civil Society Khag said.

The locals said that they approached authorities several times but nothing changed on the ground. The officials cite a lack of funds as the reason for the stoppage of work on this hostel where 80% of work has already been done.

The locals appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene in the matter and direct the executing agency to get the work done in the stipulated time. [KNT]
