Three militants were killed in an encounter in Munjh Marg area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday morning, police said.

The slain militants are affiliated with the banned militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, police said.

The gunfight raged after joint forces cordoned off the area when they received the information about the movement of militants.

During the exchange of fire three militants were killed.

All the slain militants are locals from Kashmir Valley.

ADGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said that among the 3 slain militants 2 have been identified as Lateef Ahmed Lone of Shopian who was involved in the killing of a Kashmiri Pandit Purana Krishna Bhat, and Umer Nazir of Anantnag, involved in the killing of Till Bahadur Thapa of Nepal.

He said that an AK 47 rifle and 2 pistols have been recovered from the site of the encounter.

This encounter raged after a gap of over a month. Last time it was on November 20 when as per police a militant associate Sajad Tantray of Kulgam involved in the attack on migrant workers was killed in militant firing when he was with them to identify a militant hideout in Chek Dudo Bijbehara area of Anantnag district.
