Property worth crores was destroyed in a devastating fire incident engulfing houses and shops in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The incident occurred at Dangarpora Mehman Mohalla situated in Anantnag market.

Local sources told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that sparks from the power supply line started emanating at around 2:30 AM Friday that ignited the roof of a Jewellers shop. The flames spread to other parts in no time, they said.

The fire tenders from Mattan, Bijbehara, Achabal, and main fire station in Anantnag were pressed to service to douse the flames.

They said that fire after starting from ‘Zam Zam Jewelers’ spread to other shops and buildings. “At least 14 structures including shops and houses were gutted in the fire incident,” said a local adding that losses may be in crores of rupees.

He said that hosiery items worth lakhs were gutted in a store located in the house of one Gulzar Ahmed Thokar.

Joint Director Fire and Emergency Services B A Shah said that fire was doused due to the hard efforts of fire-fighters. He said there was a threat to the whole locality which is a congested one but luckily the water available from a local stream turned the tide and the locality was saved from the disaster. [KNT]
