The installation of Smart Meters in Abi Guzar area of Srinagar city triggered a massive protest on Friday.

The women protesters foiled the bid of the Power Development Department employees to install the Smart Meters in the area. A large number of women came out of the house and forced the employees to leave the area.

“We are too poor and these days when it is difficult to meet both ends, how come the government can put an extra burden on us? We won’t allow PDD to install these meters here,” some of the protesting women told news agency Kashmir News Trust.

The protesting women raised slogans against the PDD and the government. Some of the angry women tried to break the meters. A couple of meters that were installed in the area were pulled down by the protesters.

The protesters said that they are poor and lack basic facilities in their area. “We are poor and cannot afford bills generated by these Smart Meters,” said a female protester.

Pertinently, the installation of Smart Meters has sparked protests everywhere. An Engineer from the PDD had even registered a police complaint against some female protesters in Raj Bagh who allegedly broke these meters after they were installed. (KNT)
