Nowgam Encounter Aftermath: Police arrest many youth for ‘stone-pelting’

Srinagar: Police have arrested several youth on charges of stone-pelting in Nowgam area of Srinagar outskirts.

Post encounter, a large number of youth resorted to stone-pelting in Wanabal Nowgam area yesterday. Police fired tear smoke shells to disperse them, however, agitated youth hurled stones near Railway Bridge the whole day. The traffic was disrupted because of stone-pelting. Those on way to Pulwama, Kanipora, Chattargam areas had to take alternate routes.

The stone-pelting started after three LeT militants were killed in an encounter in Nowgam Wanabal area on Wednesday.

Police said that it arrested many youth for ‘arson, stone-pelting’ during post-encounter.

Police said that as per the SOP, the site encounter was being cleared to ensure the safety of citizens. Accordingly, signboards were also placed around the site of the encounter, while it was being sanitized, to dissuade citizens from approaching the site prior to sanitization with regard to any left-over explosives from militants that could cause damage to locals.

Police said that after the encounter a large number of boys assembled near from adjacent areas near Shankerpora Wanabal carrying lathies and stones in their hands and tried to pelt stones on the deployed personnel which had been there to keep people away from the encounter site that was being cleared of explosive debris. In order to disperse the mob smoke shells were used, as per the SOPs.

Police said that an FIR vide number 46/2022 under relevant sections of law stands registered at Police Station Nowgam and some youth were identified from videos and from initial investigation, many of these were picked up and are being examined in the said case. Some of them have been arrested as well.

Police said that it requests people to stay away from encounter sites so to ensure their own safety, keeping in view the likelihood of leftover explosives from the militants. (KNT)
