Srinagar, Apr 17, KNT: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday expressed solidarity with Muslims across India over the Wakf Act issue, stating that while the Jammu and Kashmir government did not support Muslims on the matter, the people of the region and her party stand firmly with the community.
Speaking to reporters, Mehbooba said, “Though the Jammu and Kashmir administration failed to back the Muslim community on the Wakf Bill, the PDP and the people of Jammu and Kashmir stand united with Muslims across the country.”
Responding to a question about former RAW chief A.S. Dulat, Mehbooba remarked that his proximity to the Abdullah family and the National Conference was well known. “He has been treated like a family member by them,” she said.
Mehbooba pointed out that Dulat, in his recent book, had revealed the position of National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah on Article 370, calling it “nothing new.” She alleged that the NC leadership had been secretly engaging with the BJP since 2014. “We have known this for a long time,” she added.
On the legal challenge to the Wakf Act, the PDP chief expressed hope that the Supreme Court would deliver a verdict in favour of Muslims. Drawing a sharp comparison, she said, “When Afzal Guru was hanged, the court cited collective conscience, despite lack of concrete evidence. We now hope that the same collective conscience will guide the court to deliver justice to Muslims in this case.”
Mehbooba’s remarks come at a time of heightened debate around the Wakf Act and growing concerns among the Muslim community over the government’s approach toward religious and minority institutions.
