Omar Abdullah Announces Revival of Press Club in Srinagar, Jammu, Assures Secure, Transparent Environment for Journalists

 

Jammu, Mar 7, KNT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in a significant budget statement, underscored his government’s unwavering commitment to press freedom in Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing the legislative assembly, Abdullah emphasized the vital role of the media in upholding democracy, strengthening institutions, and ensuring transparency in governance.

“The media plays a vital role in shaping public opinion, strengthening democratic institutions, and keeping citizens informed. In this spirit, we are committed to strengthening press infrastructure, facilitating greater access to information, and protecting the rights of journalists,” Omar Abdullah said.

In a major announcement, the Chief Minister stated that his government would take concrete steps to “revive and support the Press Club in Jammu and Srinagar, providing a dedicated space for journalists to engage, collaborate, and contribute meaningfully to public discourse.”

The statement comes at a time when concerns about press freedom in Jammu and Kashmir have been widely discussed, with journalists facing challenges ranging from restricted access to information to security concerns. The government’s initiative to provide institutional support for the media fraternity has been welcomed by press bodies and journalist associations.

Omar Abdullah further asserted that his administration would work towards creating a more secure and transparent environment for journalists. “We will ensure that media professionals can carry out their work without fear or undue restrictions. Our commitment to press freedom is unwavering, and we recognize the need for a thriving and independent press in a democratic society,” he added. [KNT]
