From Batamaloo To Britain: How Sheikh Asif Is Reshaping Kashmir's Startup Landscape
A school dropout turned tech CEO is quietly building an IT revolution in the Valley — one student, one startup at a time.
In a region long defined by geopolitical uncertainty and economic challenges, a new generation of entrepreneurs is beginning to chart a different course. At the forefront of this quiet digital revolution stands Sheikh Asif a Srinagar-born entrepreneur whose trajectory from financial hardship to international business success is fast becoming a blueprint for Kashmir’s aspiring youth.
Born in the Batamaloo neighbourhood of Srinagar, Asif was forced to abandon his schooling in Class VIII due to severe financial difficulties at home. His father’s prolonged illness, which began around the year 2000, left the family in precarious circumstances, compelling a teenage Asif to seek employment at the age of 15. Yet rather than accepting limitation, he continued to educate himself learning the intricacies of computers and web technology while working in local shops.
That self-driven pursuit of knowledge eventually took him far beyond the Valley. His journey led him from Kashmir to Delhi, and from Delhi to London, where he initially worked for a web design firm before founding his own company Thames Infotech in 2016. What began as a one-man operation in London has since grown into a technology enterprise operating out of Manchester, UK, and Kashmir, India.
Bringing the Business Back Home
What distinguishes Asif from many diaspora entrepreneurs is his deliberate decision to redirect his success toward his home region. He returned to Kashmir from Manchester in 2018 with a clear objective: to raise awareness about information technology education in India, particularly in a region where students overwhelmingly gravitate toward conventional careers in medicine and engineering.
Since his return, Asif has been working to revolutionise the digital industry in Kashmir Valley, offering web design, digital marketing, and entrepreneurship coaching often at no cost to his students. He has stated that post-project support is provided free of charge, a practice he believes builds trust and long-term relationships with clients and learners alike.
His stated mission is ambitious: to teach 10,000 students per year, free of charge, equipping Kashmiri youth with skills in web development, graphic design, digital marketing, and related disciplines. To date, he has guided over 1,000 students, a number that continues to grow through online platforms and in-person workshops.
An Ecosystem Builder
Asif’s contributions to the local startup ecosystem extend well beyond the classroom. He has founded and invested in approximately 20 startups, reflecting a broader strategic vision for nurturing entrepreneurial activity in the region. Among his notable ventures is EZ Finder, a versatile business directory platform launched in 2022, designed to connect enterprises and foster collaboration across sectors.
He is also developing a multi-service platform concept that would cater to everyday community needs spanning food delivery, home services such as plumbing, and other local utilities signalling an intent to address the Valley’s service economy through technology.
In his own words: “I believe in the untapped potential of our region and its people. Through innovative platforms and services, we can address the evolving needs of our community and create opportunities for economic growth.”
Challenging the Traditional Mindset
Beyond business metrics, Asif has emerged as a vocal advocate for broadening Kashmir’s professional imagination. He regularly urges parents to move beyond conventional expectations and support their children’s interest in technology and entrepreneurship fields that, he argues, offer flexible, financially viable career paths that can be pursued from home.
“As freelancers, we can work from home and earn a good living, with no time limitations,” he has said, addressing students across the region. “This is the beauty of IT education.”
He has also authored four booklets “Digitization in Business,” “Online Business Ideas,” “Start a Business,” and “Start a Startup” each aimed at providing practical guidance to first-time entrepreneurs.
Recognition and the Road Ahead
His contributions have earned him recognition including the Indian Icon Business Award in 2019, the Top Developer of the Year title for three consecutive years from 2019 to 2021, and the Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2022 from The Fireboxx, Bangalore.
For a region still finding its footing in the digital economy, Sheikh Asif represents something increasingly rare: an entrepreneur who has tasted international success and chosen to invest it back into the community that shaped him. Whether his vision of an “IT revolution” for Kashmir fully materialises remains to be seen but the foundations, laid student by student and startup by startup, are already in place.
