Srinagar, Apr 25, KNT: Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, arrived in Kashmir on Friday to express solidarity with the victims of the recent Pahalgam attack that left 26 civilians dead, most of them tourists. A senior Congress leader said Gandhi’s visit aims to comfort the injured and send a strong message of unity and support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Gandhi is expected to visit the Army’s Base Hospital in Srinagar’s Badamibagh Cantonment to enquire about the condition of those wounded in the April 22 attack. The tragic incident saw several people seriously injured when militants opened fire in a tourist area.
During his visit, Gandhi is also scheduled to interact with a range of delegations, including party representatives, and stakeholders from the trade and tourism sectors, in an effort to understand their concerns and challenges in the wake of the violence.
According to party sources, the Congress leader is likely to hold individual meetings with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Describing the visit as one of empathy and national unity, a Congress leader said Gandhi had come to “heal the wounds of the people” and reassure them that the country stands with Kashmir during this difficult time.
Rahul Gandhi had cut short his ongoing trip to the United States to attend an emergency meeting of the Congress Working Committee following the attack. He also participated in an all-party meeting called by the central government to discuss the Pahalgam tragedy and the way forward. [KNT]
