Frequent Transformer Damage Plunges Shopian Village Into Darkness, Locals Seek Authorities’ Intervention

Shopian, Mar 26, KNT: Villagers of Chowhan Mohalla Chotipora village in South Kashmir’s Shopian, are facing severe hardships due to the repeated breakdown of their electric transformer, which has failed four times in just ten days. The frequent disruptions have left villagers struggling, especially during the ongoing holy month of Ramadan.

Locals expressed their frustration over the poor electricity service provided by the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), questioning whether such inefficiency reflects good governance. The power cuts have severely affected daily life, particularly during sehri and iftar, making it difficult for people to manage household chores and religious obligations.
“The transformer keeps breaking down, and we are left without electricity for hours, sometimes days. It is unacceptable, especially in this sacred month when uninterrupted power supply is crucial,” a villager said.
The villagers have urged the District Magistrate of Shopian to personally intervene and direct the concerned authorities to replace or permanently repair the faulty transformer. They have warned of protests if their demands are not met soon, stressing that uninterrupted power is not a luxury but a basic necessity. [KNT]
