Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention Sparks Outrage: Ladakh Observes Complete Shutdown in Solidarity

Ladakh, Oct 1, KNT: The Union Territory of Ladakh came to a standstill today as both districts observed a complete shutdown in response to the detention of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk and foot marchers from Ladakh during their “Delhi Chalo” march.

The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and Leh Apex Body (LAB) called for the strike, condemning the detentions as a blatant violation of fundamental rights to freedom of expression and assembly.

The shutdown as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust disrupted daily life and movement across the region, with shops, transport services, and establishments shutting down in solidarity. Residents of Kargil and Leh participated in the hartal, demanding accountability for the actions taken against their leaders and the continued pursuit of their four-point agenda, which includes statehood, Sixth Schedule status, establishment of a Public Service Commission, and separate parliamentary representation for Kargil and Leh regions.

Sonam Wangchuk, along with 150 marchers, were detained at the Singhu border by Delhi Police, sparking widespread criticism. The “Delhi Chalo March” was organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) to press for their demands. The delegations from Kargil and Leh had planned to stage protests at Raj Ghat and Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

The Kargil Democratic Alliance, in a strongly-worded statement, termed the detentions “an affront not only to democratic principles but also to the dignity of the people of Ladakh.” The alliance accused the ruling dispensation and Delhi Police of disregarding the voices of the Ladakh community, emphasizing the need for unity in protest against such actions.

“The people of Ladakh asserted their resolve to fight for their rights and secure a better future for Ladakh,” the Kargil Democratic Alliance said. [KNT]
