Kupwara: Online news portals directed to follow ‘Code of Ethics’

District administration Kupwara has directed unregistered online news portals especially social media news pages to adhere to the Code of Ethics laid down in the Information Technology (Intermediatory Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Ayushi Sudan as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust has issued an order under section 144 CrPC, 1973 regarding un-registered online news portals and social media news portals which reads that the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kupwara has reported that there has been mushrooming of unregistered online news portals/ social media pages reporting on news and current affairs and these unregistered online portals publish news and current affairs content without any verification and accountability.

The Deputy Commissioner in the formal order has said that the ‘publisher of news and current affairs content’ and ‘publisher of online curated content’ need to adhere to the Code of Ethics laid down in the Appendix to these rules.

“The order shall come into force with immediate effect and any violation of this order shall invite punitive action under section 188 of Indian Penal Code, 1860, and other relevant sections of law in vogue. Senior Superintendent of Police, Kupwara and Handwara shall implement the order in letter and spirit.” (KNT)
