The office of Transport Commissioner Jammu and Kashmir has declined to provide information to an activist who had sought information regarding the appointment of different employees in the Motor Vehicles Department under the Right to Information Act.

RTI activist Junaid Nazir Khan had sought information under the Right to Information Act from the Motor Vehicles Department regarding the ministerial staff working in the department both in Kashmir and Jammu divisions.

The Motor Vehicles Department informed the activist that the information is not readily available in the required format and moreover, in-service details of employees fall within the ambit of personal information.

The activist had also asked the department to reveal the name of the authority that issued appointment orders in favor of the employees.

RTI activist Junaid Nazir told news agency Kashmir News Trust that after being denied the information from the department, he approached the First Appellate Authority and now he has been advised to either appear personally or through a Counsel before the First Appellate Authority (Joint Transport Commissioner) at his office in Jammu on 12 September to present his case.

“I reside in Srinagar and have been asked to visit Jammu. It is a technological area and I can present my case via video conferencing,” he said and alleged that it is a sheer attempt to discourage him from seeking the desired information. [KNT]
