Muharram procession ends on a peaceful note: ‘Procession after 33 years dividend of peace: DC Srinagar

After the successful culmination of the 8th Muharram procession from Guru Bazar to the Dalgate area of Srinagar uptown, authorities have thanked people for their cooperation and said that it was the dividend of peace.
Over three decades after thousands of Shia mourners hit the traditional routes of Srinagar to take out the 8th Muharram procession on Thursday morning.
Earlier, there was a deadlock between the government and the Shia organizations after the former directed them to limit the number of mourners, however, Shia organizations expressed their inability to do so. Authorities later decided to allow the procession in the wee hours, which ended on a peaceful note.
Police and civil officials were seen serving soft drinks and water to the mourners. There were foolproof security arrangements. The mourners amid thumping their chests and hailing the role and life of Hazrat Imam Hussain (A.S) marched towards the destination peacefully, carrying flags and banners.
“Let’s come together as a nation to honor this deeply meaningful event and celebrate its profound impact on our lives,” Jammu Kashmir Ithadul Muslimeen leader Maulana Masroor Abbas Ansari told news agency Kashmir News Trust adding that they are really thankful to authorities for allowing the procession, unlike the previous local governments.
He said the administration has given permission for the 8th Muharram procession in Srinagar. “We welcome this decision wholeheartedly, it is the result of the sacrifices that our youth have made in the last thirty-five years. We hope there will be no ban on Ashoora procession as well,” he added.
The 8th and 10th Muharram processions in Srinagar were “banned” since 1990. These were banned by then Governor Jagmohan after the eruption of militancy.
While talking to reporters, District Development Commissioner Srinagar Aijaz Asadh said that Imam Hussain (A.S) fought for justice, peace, and truth and this procession is a glowing tribute to His (A.S) struggle for peace and truth. He said this procession in Srinagar after a gap of 33 years is also a dividend of peace.
SSP Srinagar Rakesh Bhalwal thanked the people for their cooperation and said that this procession was possible because of the cooperation extended by the people. “We thank all,” he said adding that decision about allowing the 10th Muharram procession will be taken as per the situation. [KNT]
