Srinagar-Kargil highway to remain closed till tomorrow

The Srinagar-Kargil Highway continues to be blocked for the 2nd day due to multiple avalanches at Zogila Pass. According to reports, hundreds of passenger vehicles and trucks are stranded on either side of the road.

Police said that the highway will remain blocked till May 10. While talking to the news agency Kashmir News Trust SDPO Kangan Muzaffar Jan said that after the snow avalanches yesterday, the highway is blocked and no traffic will be allowed till May 10 (Wednesday).

He said after the inspection of the highway tomorrow, a decision will be taken accordingly about the road status.

Police rescued all the passengers yesterday after two vehicles rolled down a cliff at Panimatha Zojila Pass when snow avalanche hit them.

Reports said that hundreds of vehicles are stranded at Sonmarg and Minimarg waiting for opening of the road.

Last month also the same highway was closed on April 17 after avalanches hit the road for two consecutive days at Zogila Pass. Several vehicles were buried under snow and the drivers and passengers were rescued, some of them in injured condition. Later fresh snowfall occurred. [KNT]
