Srinagar episode aftermath: Get tenant verification done: Police ‘House owner may face legal action’

Srinagar: In a bid to check heinous crimes in society, Police on Wednesday appealed to property owners to not rent out their premises/rooms without obtaining details of their tenants.

Pertinently, three criminals including a juvenile from Rafiabad Sopore sexually assaulted a minor girl at a rented house after kidnapping her in Malabagh area of Srinagar outskirt.

In this regard police today asked landlords to get the tenants verification done.

“In view of yesterday’s kidnapping & sexual assault case, all are requested again to get tenant verification done. Here 3 criminal-minded persons from Rafiabad, Sopore were staying on rent in Malbagh area & landlord didn’t do any tenant verification. He will also face legal action,” police tweeted.

Earlier also after the murder of an 85-year-old woman by a non-local domestic help in Behrar Lal Bazar area of Srinagar, police had requested landlords to get the tenants’ verification done.

While talking to news agency Kashmir News Trust, a senior police officer said that in order to curb the criminals, it is the responsibility of the landlords to furnish all the details about the occupants.

“People often ignore the importance of tenant verification which could prove dangerous for the property owners and the general public,” he said adding that Police verification of tenants not only helps in tracking the absconding culprit but also enhances the security of the premises while it is also helpful in curbing heinous crimes.
