Truckers stage protest after MVD Inspector allegedly manhandles a driver in Sonmarg

SONMARG: Scores of drivers staged a protest after an Inspector from Motor Vehicle Department allegedly manhandled a truck driver at Sonmarg Weight Bridge.

Drivers alleged that they are being harassed and are subjected to humiliation on daily basis.

The protesting drivers assembled at Sonmarg Truck Yard and sought action against erring employees who according to them harass and humiliate them without any reason.

They said Transport Department has  set up a weight bridge at Sonamarg to check the load of heavy motor vehicles. The drivers told news agency Kashmir News Trust that this weight bridge has become a nuisance for them.

“Today an Inspector from MVD thrashed and abused one of the drivers for carrying extra weight. If there was extra weight, the driver should have been fined but apart from realizing the fine, the driver was subjected to humiliation and he was manhandled,” they said.

“They claim nobody was beaten up but we demand authorities should check CCTV footage to expose their white lie,” the drivers said and sought intervention of Transport Commissioner.

“For overweight, they demand a fine to the tune of Rs 22,000 and when any driver objects, he is being roughed up,” they alleged.

Due to protest the Weight Bridge was closed for over three hours.

The drivers ended their protest after the intervention of police that assured them action against the erring employee. (KNT)
