Srinagar, Apr 14, KNT: Senior CPI (M) leader and Kulgam MLA, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, has sharply criticised the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, calling it a direct attack on the constitutional and religious rights of minorities, particularly Muslims.
Addressing a press conference at his official residence, Tarigami said the CPI (M) had adopted a resolution at its 24th Party Congress held in Tamil Nadu, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the “divisive and unjust” Waqf Amendment Act.
“Waqf properties are governed by Islamic principles, which do not permit non-Muslims to manage them. The amended law, however, allows non-Muslim members in Waqf Boards. This is unacceptable and unconstitutional,” Tarigami asserted.
He noted that during the recent Budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, the issue was raised and a debate was sought. “We have been elected to raise the voice of the people. Why was this opportunity wasted?” he asked, while expressing disappointment over the unutilized three-day period during the session.
Tarigami said the party also passed another resolution demanding restoration of full statehood and democratic rights to Jammu and Kashmir. “Since August 5, 2019, there has been a systematic erosion of rights. We are demanding not just statehood, but also safeguards for land and job rights,” he said.
The CPI (M) leader also expressed concern over punitive action being taken against government employees for the alleged actions of their relatives. “This is unjust and must stop. Guilt cannot be transferred by relation,” he said.
Tarigami highlighted the exploitation of need-based workers and daily wagers, accusing the administration of denying them rightful wages despite the existence of the Minimum Wages Act.
On media issues, he said that several non-operational newspapers in Jammu and Kashmir were receiving government advertisements, while genuine press voices remained stifled. “This misuse must end. Freedom of the press is a pillar of democracy,” he stressed.
When asked about the underutilization of Assembly time, Tarigami clarified, “I’m not in the government, but I’m part of the alliance. I will support any initiative that serves the public good.”
