Sopore attack leaves two cops, two civilians dead, Omar, Mehbooba condemns
SOPORE: A militant attack in North Kashmir’s Sopore town left four persons including two cops dead on Saturday.
Block Medical Officer Sopore dr Zulufkar confirmed to news agency Kashmir News Trust that four persons including two civilians and two cops were brought dead at Sopore hospital. He said a cop and a civilian were injured and referred to Srinagar hospitals for advanced treatment.
The slain cops have been identified as Constable Wasim Ahmed Bhat son of Muhammad Saleem (657/IRP 3rd Battalion, a resident of Narbal Budgam and Constable Showkat Ahmed Parray son of Abdul Gani Parray (841/IRP 3rd Battalion) of Goripora Beerwah Budgam.
Hospital sources identified the slain civilians as Bashir Ahmed of Mehrajpora Sopore and Manzoor Ahmed Shalla, a resident of Shalimar Colony Sopore.
A cop identified as Mukesh Kumar son of Bodhraj Kumar, a resident of Peerah Ramban has been shifted to Srinagar based 92 Base Army hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.
Another injured civilian Tariq Ahmed Dar son of Ghulam Nabi of Sopore who has abdomen injuries is undergoing treatment at SMHS Hospital Srinagar.
Police sources said that militants after hurling a grenade fired upon the police party. There was a civilian movement during the attack. The attack created panic in the town while militants fled away from the spot. “A massive hunt was launched to nab the attackers,” said a police officer.
Former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah condemned the attack. Mehbooba Mufti while talking to reporters said that such attacks defame the image of Kashmir in international community.
Omar Abdullah tweeted: “Terrible news coming in from Sopore. Such attacks must be condemned without reservation. Prayers for the injured & condolences to the families of the deceased.” (KNT)
