After over two decades, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) cleared a major chunk of road in old Srinagar city of Bohri Kadal area from Ice-Cream sellers on Tuesday.

The occupation of a major chunk of the roadside had become a source of traffic jams at congested Bohri Kadal Chowk.

The anti-encroachment drive was carried out by Zaina Kadal Ward Officer Mukhtar Khan on the directions of Commissioner SMC Aamir Athar Khan.

“We cleared the road from encroachers who were selling ‘Mutka Kulfi’ for over 20 years on the roadside. Their encroachment of the road was a source of great inconvenience to the general public, especially commuters,” Ward Office Mukhtar Khan told news agency Kashmir News Trust adding that action will be initiated against everyone who encroaches either footpaths or display their merchandise outside the shops.

Meanwhile, locals have appreciated the action on the part of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation urging the Corporation to carry out such drives in the interior of the city as well.

“The portion of the road cleared today was actually a bus stand but some people had encroached it for their self-interest,” locals present on the spot said. [KNT]
