After facing ire from political leaders across Jammu and Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Jammu Avny Lavasa on Thursday withdrew her earlier order allowing people who have been living for more than one year in the Jammu district to register as voters.

The controversial order had allowed all residents who have lived in Jammu for more than a year to register as voters.

The Deputy Commissioner of Jammu, Avny Lavasa had authorized tehsildars (revenue officials) to issue certificates of residence to anyone who has lived in the district for more than one year. The withdrawal came just a day after the order was issued.

Pertinently, Lavasa is also the District Election Officer.

According to the earlier order, anyone who has lived in the Jammu district for more than one year could register as voters using documents like the Aadhar Card, water/electricity/gas connection, bank passbooks, passport, registered land deeds, etc., as proof of residence.

The order was met with immediate backlash from the regional parties including PDP, NC and Peoples Conference. Mehbooba Mufti while opposing the the government’s move had said that it is the first blow to the identity of Dogras in Jammu. (KNT)
