National Conference Faces Backlash Over Selective Free Electricity Scheme

Srinagar, Mar 7, KNT: The National Conference-led government in Jammu and Kashmir is facing sharp criticism from both political opponents and the public after limiting its promise of 200 units of free electricity to Antyodaya (AAY) families only. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has sparked outrage, with political leaders accusing the party of betraying its pre-election commitments.

The government’s move has led to widespread disappointment, as many had expected the benefit to be extended to all households. Former Congress district president Imtiyaz Khan minced no words, accusing the National Conference of deceit. “You have cheated the people, but don’t forget, you will have to face them again when seeking votes,” he remarked.

Echoing similar sentiments, BJP leader Altaf Thakur and legislator Waheed Parra accused the National Conference of misleading the public. “People are shocked and are now searching for the party’s manifesto online,” Thakur said. “It clearly states that 200 units of electricity will be given to all, while 12 free cylinders are promised for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category. This is a betrayal.”

The criticism is not just about electricity; it extends to the broader commitments made by the National Conference during its election campaign. The party had outlined 12 key guarantees, including the restoration of Article 370 and 35A, the repeal of the Public Safety Act (PSA), the release of political prisoners, the creation of one lakh jobs, and improved access to basic services like electricity and water.

Additionally, the party had pledged to provide free travel for women in public transport, ease passport issuance, and stop the alleged harassment of people on highways. The National Conference also promised to establish a Minority Commission, strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS), and enhance marriage assistance and pensioners’ medical allowances.

In the economic sector, the party vowed to grant industry status to the tourism sector, explore new tourist destinations in the Pir Panjal and Chenab regions, and set up industrial parks and special economic zones to attract investment. Furthermore, it promised responsible mining of newly discovered lithium reserves and enforcement of royalty payments in line with the Supreme Court’s directive.

The backlash against the selective free electricity scheme has reignited debates over the National Conference’s credibility and ability to fulfill its promises. With opposition leaders ramping up attacks and public discontent brewing, the Omar Abdullah-led government finds itself under pressure to either revisit its policy or face mounting political repercussions.
