Srinagar, Apr 11, KNT: Celebrated Kashmiri-born scientist and internationally acclaimed researcher, Dr. Khalid Shah—Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Professor at Harvard Medical School—delivered a compelling lecture on the “Role of Cellular and Gene Therapy in Brain Tumor Therapeutics” at a Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Research Orientation Program organized jointly by SKIMS-NAMS and SKIMS Research Cell.
Dr. Shah, widely regarded for his pioneering work in cancer biology and translational medicine, shed light on the transformative role of interdisciplinary collaboration, engineered cellular therapies, and cutting-edge technologies in revolutionizing the treatment of brain tumors. He underscored the need for global scientific cooperation to accelerate progress in neuro-oncology.
“The battle against brain tumors cannot be fought in isolation—it demands innovative research, clinical insight, and global collaboration,” Dr. Shah said. “Only by working together across borders and disciplines can we deliver truly transformative therapies and renewed hope to patients everywhere, including my own homeland.”
Following his lecture, SKIMS Research Cell hosted a high-level meeting between Dr. Shah, the Director of SKIMS, and senior faculty members to explore collaborative opportunities in cancer research. A key outcome of the discussions was a shared vision to establish an ‘Integrated Cell and Gene Therapy Centre’ at SKIMS—envisioned as the first of its kind in India. The proposed centre aims to develop novel treatment strategies for cancer and provide significant benefits to patients across the region.
The event also included an engaging Q&A session, during which participants discussed critical issues in cancer management, potential funding avenues for high-impact research, and frameworks for future collaboration. Dr. Shah’s commitment to translating scientific discoveries into patient-ready treatments, especially with a focus on contributing to his native Kashmir, was widely appreciated.
The session concluded with resounding praise for Dr. Shah’s visionary leadership and deep-rooted commitment to advancing cancer care globally and locally. [KNT]
