NC Declines to Back No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker Rather

Jammu, Apr 8, KNT: The National Conference on Tuesday made it clear that it would not support the no-confidence motion filed by several Kashmir-based opposition parties against Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather.
Talking to reporters after the House was adjourned, NC legislator Salman Sagar said his party has no plans to back the motion. “No, not at all,” Sagar replied bluntly when asked about their stance on the issue.
The no-confidence motion was brought forward by opposition members in protest against the Speaker’s refusal to allow a debate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025.
In their formal submission, MLAs from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and People’s Conference (PC) accused the Speaker of silencing dissent and violating parliamentary norms. “This move comes amid growing discontent in the House over the Speaker’s behaviour, particularly his denial of an adjournment motion and refusal to consider a resolution moved by the opposition,” the statement read.
They alleged that such actions strike at the heart of democratic practices and called the motion a necessary step to uphold the sanctity of the legislature. [KNT]
