Kashmir University Faces Major Staff Crunch with 570 Vacant Posts
Srinagar, Apr 14, KNT: The University of Kashmir is grappling with a severe manpower shortage, with nearly 20% of its sanctioned positions lying vacant as of February 2024. The disclosure came in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by Jammu-based activist Raman Kumar Sharma.
According to official data provided by the Central Public Information Officer, Ghulam Mohammed Wani, 570 out of 2,859 approved posts remain unfilled. The shortfall is most prominent in faculty positions, with dozens of crucial teaching roles yet to be occupied.
Of the 56 sanctioned posts for professors, only nine are currently filled, while 91 out of 120 associate professor positions are vacant. The situation isn’t much better at the assistant professor level, where 80 of the 371 sanctioned posts remain unoccupied.
In addition, five out of seven sanctioned director-level posts are also lying vacant, and administrative staff shortages persist, including 110 vacant posts of junior assistants.
Wani, who also serves as Assistant Registrar, confirmed the figures and said efforts to fill the vacancies are underway, although no timeline was provided.
