Militant Killed, Policeman Injured in North Kashmir Gunfight

Kupwara, Mar 17, KNT: A militant was killed while a policeman sustained injuries during an encounter in the Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday.
According to police sources, a joint team of the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a cordon-and-search operation in Krumhoora village, Zachaldara, following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants. Security officials suspect that at least two militants were hiding in the area.
As the search operation was underway, militants opened fire on the security forces, triggering a gunfight. In the exchange of fire, one militant was neutralized, while a police personnel sustained injuries and was shifted to a medical facility for treatment.
Confirming the development, the Kashmir Zone Police posted on X, “Encounter has started at Krumhoora Zachaldara area of Handwara. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow.”
Security forces recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition from the slain militant. Meanwhile, additional reinforcements have been deployed in the area, and a search operation is underway to track down any other militants who may be hiding.
The location of the encounter, close to the Line of Control (LoC) and surrounded by dense forests, presents operational challenges for the security forces. The authorities are monitoring the situation closely as operations continue in the region.
