J&K Govt Introduces First Bill in Assembly, Proposes GST Amendments

Jammu, Mar 22, KNT: The Omar Abdullah-led government tabled its first legislative proposal in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Saturday, marking a significant step in restoring legislative autonomy to the region.

Following the Question Hour, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, on behalf of Finance Minister Omar Abdullah, introduced the Jammu and Kashmir Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The bill aims to align the Union Territory’s GST framework with recent modifications in the national Goods and Services Tax Act.

The proposed amendments primarily focus on streamlining tax administration and regulatory measures without imposing any additional financial burden.

This legislative move holds particular significance as it comes after years of central control over Jammu and Kashmir’s legislative authority. Since the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of the erstwhile state in 2019, tax-related laws in the region were enacted through parliamentary decisions. [KNT]
