J&K Govt Announces 200 Units of Free Electricity for AAY Families, Focuses on Power Sector Revival

Srinagar, Mar 7, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced 200 units of free electricity per month for all Antyodaya (AAY) families in the Union Territory. The initiative, integrated with the PM Suryaghar Bijli Yojana, will enable the installation of grid-connected solar systems, eliminating electricity bills for the beneficiaries.
Presenting the budget in the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister stated that the scheme will be implemented with an investment of ₹750 crore over five years. “This will not only provide relief to economically weaker sections but also reduce Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses and promote sustainable energy,” he said.
Highlighting the financial stress in the power sector, he revealed that ₹28,000 crore had been borrowed in the last few years, pushing public debt from 48% of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in FY 2015-16 to 52% in 2023-24. With the power sector identified as a top priority, the government aims to stabilize it through reforms and strategic investments.
