Govt Committed to Providing 200 Units of Free Electricity: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, Mar 26, KNT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing 200 units of free electricity, stating that the process has already begun by extending the benefit to the poorest sections of society.

Responding to a query from People’s Conference legislator Sajad Lone in the Assembly, Abdullah emphasized that the government has repeatedly clarified its stance on free electricity. “We have reiterated this in the Lieutenant Governor’s address, the budget speech, and while responding to demands for grants,” he said.

When Lone sought clarification on whether the 200-unit benefit applies to all households, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s position but did not specify further.

Addressing concerns over the feasibility of solar power panels in Kashmir generating 2 KW of electricity, Abdullah responded that such technical matters should be left to the government. “It is the government’s responsibility to ensure electricity reaches every household,” he asserted.

The statement comes amid growing discussions on energy access and affordability in Jammu and Kashmir, with the government working to expand its renewable energy initiatives.
