Doctors Ditch Dress Code for Casual Wear in Hospitals

Srinagar, Mar 17, KNT: Concerns have been raised over the lack of professionalism among some medical practitioners who fail to adhere to the prescribed dress code in hospitals. Reports indicate that doctors in various healthcare institutions, including top hospitals, are seen wearing jeans, jackets, and casual attire, making it difficult for patients and attendants to recognize them as medical professionals.

Recently, Legislator Mehraj Malik brought this issue to light in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, urging the government to enforce a strict dress code for doctors. He emphasized that maintaining a professional appearance is crucial for instilling confidence in patients and upholding the dignity of the medical profession.

Patients and their attendants have expressed their dismay, stating that the absence of a proper dress code creates confusion and diminishes the trust they place in medical professionals.

“When doctors dress casually, they blend in with the general crowd, making it difficult to differentiate them from visitors,” said an attendant at a leading hospital in Srinagar.

While medical guidelines prescribe white coats and formal attire for doctors, reports suggest that enforcement remains lax, allowing many practitioners to disregard these norms.

Top Health department officials acknowledged the complaints and assured that steps will be taken to ensure strict adherence to the dress code in all healthcare institutions. [KNT]
