Delayed Payments, Material Shortage: J&K Contractors Raise Alarm, Warn of Boycott

Kupwara, Mar 8, KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir Central Contractors Coordination Committee (JKCCCC) has issued a stern warning to the government, threatening to boycott tenders if their long-pending demands are not addressed.

During a visit to Kupwara as part of their North-South outreach, JKCCCC General Secretary Farooq Dar expressed frustration over delayed payments, tendering issues, and material shortages. He criticized both the ruling government and opposition for neglecting contractors’ concerns despite making promises during election campaigns.

Dar specifically warned against contractors bidding 40-50% below estimated costs, arguing that such practices compromise construction quality and ultimately lead to higher long-term expenses. He urged authorities to release pending payments immediately and implement reforms, including exempting tenders up to Rs 10 lakh from e-tendering and making tenders up to Rs 5 crore condition-free.

Contractors, he stressed, play a crucial role in development and should be treated with respect to ensure the successful completion of public infrastructure projects. Senior JKCCCC leaders and Kupwara Coordination Committee members participated in the meeting. [KNT]
