PDP’s Iltija and Mehbooba Mufti Allegedly Placed Under House Arrest Amid Civilian Deaths

Srinagar, Feb 10, KNT: People’s Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti claimed on Saturday that she and her mother, former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, were placed under house arrest to prevent them from visiting families of two civilians who died in separate incidents in Sopore and Kathua.

“Our gates have been locked. My mother was to visit Sopore where Waseem Mir was shot dead by the Army, and I was supposed to visit Kathua to meet Makhan Din’s family,” Iltija said, adding that even consoling victims’ families is being “criminalized” in Kashmir.

Mir, a truck driver, was killed near Sopore on Thursday after a 23 km chase by the Army, which claimed he ignored a checkpoint. The incident has sparked outrage. In Kathua, 26-year-old Makhan Din allegedly died by suicide after recording a video detailing alleged police torture, leading to strong reactions from locals and political parties who demanded a judicial probe.
