Five Medical Students Arrested for Assaulting Kashmiri Student in Karnataka

Srinagar, Feb 20, KNT: The Karnataka Police have arrested five senior MBBS students from Al-Ameen Medical College in Vijayapura for allegedly ragging and assaulting a second-year student from Kashmir.

According to police, the incident took place on Tuesday following a dispute between the 2019 and 2022 MBBS batches during a cricket match. The clash escalated, leading to an alleged act of ragging and intimidation.

A case has been registered at Vijayapura Rural police station, with the accused identified as Mohammed Zainul (23), Sameer (24), Shaik Sawood (23), Mansoor Bhasha (24), and Muzzaffer alias Mujeeb Jamadar (23). They have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Karnataka Education Act, 1983.

The complaint was filed by Hamim Ghulam Bhat, who stated that he was watching the match when his seniors ordered him to leave. Upon refusing, he was allegedly forced to perform demeaning acts, including dancing and saluting, and was subjected to verbal abuse.

Later that night, a group of senior students reportedly entered Bhat’s hostel room, physically assaulted him, and forced him to record an apology video. They allegedly threatened his life and warned him against participating in cricket for the next four years, vowing to make his college life miserable.

The police are investigating further, and action against the accused is underway.[KNT]
