Ulema, Scholars, Activists Unite Against Drug Abuse in Kashmir

 

Handwara, Jan 13, KNT: A seminar addressing the growing menace of drug addiction and issues affecting women in Kashmir was held at the Community Center Kralgund in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Organized by Abu Baseer Karwaan J&K, the event brought together Ulema, scholars, Imams, civil society activists, and students to collectively confront these pressing social challenges.

In his inaugural speech, Mufti Hilal expressed deep concern over the rising prevalence of drug abuse among both boys and girls in the Valley, citing its easy availability as a critical issue. “This seminar aims to unite us in combating drug addiction, which threatens the future of our society,” he said.

He also highlighted the alarming rates of domestic violence and gender-based discrimination in a predominantly Muslim society that upholds the dignity and rights of women. “It is the responsibility of Ulema, Imams, and Khateebs to raise awareness about women’s rights and foster respect for them as enshrined in Islam,” he added.

Speakers as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust emphasized the harmful effects of drug addiction, urging collective efforts to eradicate the menace. Students were encouraged to abstain from drugs and other social evils, instead becoming role models in education, sports, and other pursuits. Awareness was also raised about the causes and consequences of drug abuse and the importance of rehabilitation centers in recovery.

“Drug addiction is creating severe health problems for our youth, with the student community being particularly vulnerable,” said one speaker.

Prominent attendees included Tehsildar Kralgund Ghulam Rasool Bhat as the chief guest, BDO Qaziabad Naveed Altaf as the guest of honor, and DySP Dr. Abdul Majid. Other key participants included Waseem Ahmad Shah, SHO Kralgund, members of Abu Baseer Karwaan such as Mufti Shakir Ahmad, Mufti Irfan, and Qari Owais, and representatives from the Elite Institute of Excellence, including Er. Tawseef Nazir Lone and Bilal Ahmad Malik.

The seminar, moderated by Mufti Rayees Ahmad, concluded with a call for collective responsibility in addressing drug addiction and social evils to build a healthier and more equitable society in Kashmir. [KNT]
