Srinagar, Jan 10, KNT: Kashmir’s age-old tradition of raising Kashmiri chickens at home is now nearly extinct. Modern lifestyles and increasing responsibilities have led people to abandon domestic poultry farming in favor of purchasing broiler chickens from markets.
Once considered a hallmark of Kashmiri households, native chickens are now rare. The easy availability and affordability of broiler chickens in the valley have made them a preferred choice for consumers. The time, effort, and costs associated with raising native chickens have caused this tradition to vanish.
Experts point out that the meat of native chickens is more nutritious and healthier, but people are gravitating toward broiler chickens because they are cheaper and readily available. However, concerns have been raised about the potential health risks associated with consuming broiler chickens.
Some argue that urbanization, limited space, and busy lifestyles discourage the practice of raising native chickens. Even in rural areas, where this was once a necessity and a hobby, the trend is declining.
Agricultural experts emphasize that to revive the practice of raising native chickens, the government must introduce special schemes and incentives. Additionally, raising awareness about the benefits of native chickens and the possible drawbacks of broiler consumption is essential.
Public circles have called for measures to preserve this ancient tradition, ensuring that this cultural identity of Kashmir remains intact while promoting a shift toward healthier food practices. [KNT]
