Over his remarks at VHP event, Rahullah Mehdi to move impeach motion against sitting judge in Parliament

Srinagar, Dec 10, KNT: National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi is spearheading an impeachment motion in Parliament to remove Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court, accusing him of breaching judicial conduct with controversial remarks made at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event.

Mehdi has begun gathering the required 100 signatures to initiate the motion, with support already confirmed from AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Samajwadi Party MPs Zia ur Rehman and Mohibbullah, Sudama Prasad of CPI(ML)(L), and Rajkumar Roat of the Bharat Adivasi Party. Mehdi has also reached out to members of Congress, DMK, Trinamool Congress, and other like-minded parties, expressing optimism about their support.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mehdi as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust stated that these parties believe in the idea of India and its principles and values. He said he is hopeful that they will support this motion.

The notice for impeachment accuses Justice Yadav of violating principles of judicial conduct and the constitutional mandate. Mehdi argued that the judge’s actions undermine the judiciary’s integrity, impartiality, and secular ethos.

Justice Yadav’s contentious remarks came during a VHP legal cell event on court premises. Video evidence and media reports highlight his comments on practices like triple talaq and ‘halala, which he criticized for disrespecting women. “You can’t claim the right to have four wives, perform halala, or practice triple talaq,” he said. He also expressed support for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating that having separate laws for different communities poses a threat to national unity.[KNT]
