Abdul Rahim Rather Elected Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly
Srinagar, Nov 4, KNT: Veteran National Conference leader Abdul Rahim Rather has been appointed as the first Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah congratulated Rather, stating he was the obvious choice with no objections.
Rather, 80, previously served as Speaker and Leader of the Opposition from 2002-2008. The BJP nominated Narinder Singh Raina for Deputy Speaker.
This assembly session marks the first since 2018, preceding Jammu and Kashmir’s reorganization into union territories. Security is heightened, with key events including the Lieutenant Governor’s address and obituary references.
