Omar Abdullah Set to Become Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister, Elected Leader of Legislature Party

Srinagar, Oct 10, KNT: Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the National Conference (NC), is all set to take the reins as Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister after being unanimously elected as the leader of the legislature party. This development comes after the NC’s impressive win in the 2024 Assembly Elections, where they secured 42 seats.

Omar  Abdullah’s journey to the top post is a remarkable one. At 38, he became India’s youngest Chief Minister in 2009, and now, he’s poised to take on the role once again. His political trajectory is marked by significant milestones, including his tenure as Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and External Affairs.

The NC’s decision to elect Omar Abdullah as leader was made during a meeting at the party headquarters in Srinagar, attended by senior leaders and newly elected MLAs, including NC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah. With this development, the party is expected to stake its claim to the Union Territory’s top post.

The NC has won 42 seats, followed by the BJP with 29, Congress with six, PDP three, CPI(M) one, Peoples Conference one, Aam Aadmi Party one and Independents seven seats in the 98-member J&K Legislative Assembly. The Lt. Governor will nominate five members on the recommendations of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Meanwhile, Choudhary Akram, who won the election from the Surankote Assembly seat in Poonch district as an Independent candidate, met Omar Abdullah and decided to join the NC. Independent candidate from Inderwal constituency Pyre Lal has already joined the National Conference. [KNT]
