In a suspected militant attack in South Kashmir’s Shopian district two non-local labourers from Uttar Pradesh were killed in the middle of the night.

Police sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that the attack on non-local labourers was carried out in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday at around 12:25 in Hermain hamlet of Shopian.

They said militants barged into rented accommodation and lobbed a grenade on the labourers who were asleep. Two labourers sustained grievous injuries and were taken to District Hospital Shopian where doctors declared them dead.

They have been identified as Ram Sagar and Manish Kumar of UP.

This is the second militant attack in the Shopian district. A couple of days ago, militants shot dead a Kashmiri Pandit Pooran Krishna in Chodrigund village.

Sources added that joint forces launched a nocturnal operation to track down the militants who fled away from the spot after the attack.

Meanwhile, Police said that a ‘militant’ from Lashkar-e-Taiba has been arrested in this connection and he is now being questioned.

Police identified the arrested militant as Imran Bashir Ganaie of Hermain Shopian. Police said that this militant lobbed the grenade at migrant workers.

ADGP Kashmir after the attack in a tweet said that a hybrid militant of banned outfit LeT Imran Bashir Ganie of Harmen Shopian who lobbed a grenade has been arrested by Shopian police and further investigation and raids are going on. (KNT)
